Reflection on board game

KINETICS AND REACTOR DESIGN

“This subject is quite similar to Separation Process in the previous semester. Quite challenging too, I must say. But the good thing is that the one teaching us (at this moment) is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suzana. She taught us before in SepRo, so it is nice to know someone similar and to know her way of teaching in this new subject. Plus, her new approach for this subject is satisfying. Doing exercises in class right after learning that specific chapter is a brilliant approach. *applause* Hopefully, by the end of this semester I can score this subject with flying colors. ”

PROCESS SAFETY AND LOSS PREVENTION

“Process Safety And Loss Prevention so far is being conducted by Dr. Dzulkarnain. He too, used to teach us in HSE for a while back in the second year of degree. This subject, I must say is related to safety and how to prevent any loss occurring to one’s plant. So far, we have learned a lot and do some exercises in class. It is a good approach too I must say. The act of applying what we learned that day in class and do exercises give us the chance to know what we are doing to solve questions.”

CHEMICAL PROCESS DESIGN, INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROLS

“What more can I say, everyone says that this is the killer subject. But so far, I still can cope with this subject..hopefully. So far, the subject is okay and also tough at the same time. Dr Abbas Azarpour is doing a good job in surviving in our crowded (read: noisy) class. Sometimes, it is hard to focus what he is teaching..and I don’t even know why. Maybe the language barrier. Hmm.”

Reflections On the board game

Personally, the idea of the board game is just to make it as a medium for us to ask questions to the players. We have decided to take the idea of the board game Avione. Avione is quite similar to Battleship but it has been improvised here and there to make it more interesting. This game is much faster than Battleship since the players are needed to hit the opponent’s cockpits in order for them to score. If the player hit other parts, they are given a card with questions for them to answer. If they manage to answer that question, they will be given the clue to the location of the cockpits and also some points if they answer the questions on the card correctly. If they managed to hit one of the cockpits, they gain full score without needed to answer any questions. Therefore, we are preparing 30 questions related to three core subjects (Kinetic and Reactor Design, Process Safety and Loss Prevention and Chemical Process Design, Instrumentations and Controls) with three levels of difficulties (Easy, Medium and Hard). Last but not least, I learned a lot of new software in order to make this project work such as Prezi, Powtoon, creating e-portfolio, uploading video on Youtube and so on. Hopefully, these will be my back ups in my career life in the future.

Reflections of the questions posed for KRD, CPDIC and PSlP on the board game

Since the game requires around 30 questions, we have decided to make three levels of difficulty. Since this is an educational game, we would like them to know that the questions they are about to answer is a step-by-step approach into one’s subject, not randomly picked to have the difficult question to answer. By the end of the game, they will have some ideas on what they have been up to with respect to the three subjects. Let’s have something to work our brains with some power calculations and lengthy formulae to rock this game on! Rock on!

Contributions and roles to this project

Initially, I came up with the idea of the board game that is quite similar to Monopoly. But since Monopoly is too mainstream, we took another idea from one of our teammates that is related to Battleship. While preparing for the board game of the Battleship, suddenly we heard that there is another group doing the same thing. Thus, we re-searched and found Avione, which is quite similar to Battleship but has been improvised. From there, I have distributed the tasks to our group members. For example, David Lim with the Website e-portfolio, Low Liang Yeou with CPDIC, Nur Athirah Khalid with PSLP and Batyr Myadysoyunov and myself on KRD. From there, all of us were expected to cover the respective chapters and to come up with high-order-thinking questions to be included in our board game. While progressing, I keep on asking the rest of the members on how are they doing so far, asking for the next meeting and also putting up guidelines of the project in our group discussion. Therefore, I must say that I am the Moderator and sometimes the Recorder in our group.

Suggestions

If there is something I would like to point out in improving the subjects to gain my interest is that, it would be nice if there are more field trips so that we can know what we are dealing with in the real life, how are we supposed to deal with and etc.
